What Does Mind-Body Awareness in My Workouts Mean?

Getting your form right in your workouts is essential, but there’s also another crucial piece of the puzzle: the mind-body connection. Connecting your mind to your muscles isn’t just to feel the method at work; it’s also the best way to optimize any results you’re working toward.

Start first by thinking of the mind-body awareness that happens in the kitchen. When we eat aimlessly or ignore the signs our body is giving us, we feel out of tune with our bodies. (Think poor digestion, low energy levels and never-ending pangs of hunger. When we eat intuitively, however, we can feel more in tune with our bodiesThis helps us listen to what our bodies truly need, and act on that accordingly.

The same intuition can happen in the way we move. Trainer Alexia explains that establishing this connection, also known as the neuromuscular connection, helps put more intention behind every movement for optimal stability, mobility and strength. And for those with injuries or other sensitivities, the mind-body connection can help transfer tension away from the point of discomfort

When Misasha started her two-month transformation, she was searching for a holistic method that tended to all her needs as a mother, lawyer and fitness fanatic. By creating a consistent routine, Misasha was able to regain a better sense of control throughout her entire life. “When I got some of that intentionality back by being more mindful of how I work out, how I move my body, when I eat to fuel my body... it’s given me back some control in my life in ways I didn’t envision needing control,” she told us.

Below, Alexia walks us through a short example that will help you to better understand how the mind-body connection works and the best way to apply it to all your future workouts.
