The P.volve Effect: Maeve’s Road to Recovery

If you’ve been a part of the P.volve community for a while now, you're probably familiar with trainer Maeve and her infectious, high-energy spirit.

But she wasn’t always feeling as connected to her body as she now talks about. At 14, Maeve suffered a hip tear injury that only worsened after years of dancing and high-impact workouts.

P.volve wasn’t just the solution for her discomfort; it was the key to unlocking so much she didn’t know about her body. Maeve’s story is one so many of us can relate to: that trusting in functional fitness, listening to your body and giving it what it needs can be so life changing. Read on to learn about her journey with overcoming hip pain and how she got to where she is today.

What were your initial goals when first starting to do P.volve consistently?

At the time I discovered P.volve, I was doing a lot of HIIT training and my body was constantly fatigued and inflamed. It didn’t take long for me to feel the changes happening within from P.volve, so immediately my goals shifted into "how can I best approach movement for my body?"

Can you share more about your labral hip tear injury? When/how did you get injured?

I was a very serious ballet dancer growing up. I danced multiple hours every single day without properly recovering and I did not have the strength to support my natural hyper-mobility. There wasn’t a specific moment that I tore my labrum, but the pain started when I was fourteen. I never got the repair surgery, but I worked closely with a Pilates-based physical therapist who retrained my movement patterns and then I continued dancing for ten years.

What pain were you experiencing because of your injury?

I was able to manage the pain for most of my life, but as I got older, I became more aware that the pain I was experiencing on a daily basis was not “normal”. It was not only my hip, but my entire body was out of alignment, my joints irritated me, and I was constantly fatigued.

What everyday activities were impacted by your injury?

I unfortunately spent a lot of my life thinking it was OK to just push through my daily pain, but overall I was just extremely stiff, sore and having trouble walking up and down the stairs.

You mentioned doing a lot of HIIT that was causing inflammation – how did you know that things didn’t feel right the workouts you were doing?

There was a common theme in a lot of classesKeep pushing your limits”Lift heavier”, “Do more”—yet there was little focus on form and alignment. I have a vivid memory one day after working out of struggling to walk up the stairs to my apartment, then laying down in pain on my living room floor thinking “I HAVE to do something about this.”

How soon did you notice a change with P.volve? What was the change you noticed?

Within three weeks of consistent trainingI began to feel the changes. My glutes were firing, my hip flexors were opening up and I wasn’t fatigued after my workouts.

Was there something you struggled with before, either in your everyday life or in workouts, that you can do now that you do P.volve consistently?

I struggled to give myself permission to slow down and I did not listen to my body.  I now am full of energy (as I am sure you know if you’ve taken my class!), move with intention, proper form and feel amazing every single day thanks to P.volve!

What became your favorite workouts or pieces of equipment?

Cardio Burn is my favorite!  Now that I understand how to properly activate my body and protect my joints from my P.volve training, my cardiovascular endurance has also increased tremendously since I am not putting unnecessary stress on my body. I also love the high energy of the Cardio Burn classes, especially in the Live Virtual Studio. Plus, you can truly customize the experience for your body through modifications and variations!

What were the unexpected results you saw and felt?

After just a few weeks of consistent P.volve my daily pain subsided, my glutes were finally activating in the way they should be, and I was maintaining high energy levels throughout my entire day. What started as "just a workout that I was intrigued by" unexpectedly changed my entire life and I am forever grateful!

P.volve continuously brings me more in tune with my whole self. The deep personal connection and appreciation I now have has translated into all areas of my life: how I move, breathe, speak to myself, my intentions, my relationships, my stress levels, my menstrual cycle, and so much more.

How do you think the workouts will continue to help you recover and become stronger in the future?

I experience and learn something new about my body in every single workout with P.volve, so I look forward to trying new series, new equipment and to continue progressing on my P.volve journey!
