Red, White and Booze: Our Favorite Drinks for July 4th

Even though the solstice happened a few weeks ago, the Fourth of July is arguably the true marker of the beginning of summer in our social calendars. Whether you’re keeping it local this Independence Day or opting for a quick getaway, you’re bound to find yourself at a barbecue or two.

As always, there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about enjoying yourself without overindulging. As tempting as those colorful punch bowls may be, they are likely filled with sugary, processed mixers that not only keep you coming back for more, but can leave you with a real sugar crash (not to mention a hangover.) Instead, opt for drinks mixed with seltzer or a bit of fresh-squeezed fruit juice.

Below, find three of our favorite festive and taste cocktails to help you celebrate while still keeping your health in check.

Ruby Red Tequila Grapefruit

  • 3-4 parts fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1 part fresh lime juice
  • 2 parts blanco tequila
  • Splash of seltzer or club soda
  • Fresh rosemary

Combine together in a shaker and serve over crushed ice. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary and grapefruit wedge.

Blue Crush Vodka Martini

  • 5-10 fresh blueberries
  • 2 parts potato vodka
  • 1 part seltzer or club soda
  • Splash of fresh pineapple juice
  • Fresh mint

Muddle blueberries in a shaker, then add vodka, pineapple juice and crushed ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with 1 to 2 mint leaves (slap them between your hands to activate their flavor!).

Hosting the party yourself? This watermelon sangria is a crowd pleaser with extra health benefits! (Read about why I love watermelon here!)

Watermelon Sangria

  • ½ small watermelon
  • 2 limes, thinly sliced into rounds
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, stemmed and cut
  • 1 bottle rosé of choice

Scoop watermelon into balls with a melon baller, or cut into 1-2 in cubes. Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment-paper and freeze overnight. Combine frozen watermelon with rosé, limes and strawberries in a pitcher and refrigerate. Let mixture sit in fridge at least 4 hours, then serve.
